Butt of Lewis Lighthouse
Developed by Watercolour Music; The first of three trial templates for the Kiosk Project based in An Lanntair on the Isle of Lewis during summer 2020.
Once Upon a Time ... everybody’s summer holidays were punctuated by the ritual of postcard sending – a few words dashed off back home to friends, or the obligatory, lovingly-but-laboriously lettered nothings to a long list of aunties and grannies. Watercolour Music’s audio postcards tap into a bygone era of holiday communication by way of contemporary technology, using an ambient mixer to create online soundscape ‘postcards’ which can be individually manipulated by the visitor to create their own audio memory of places visited or events encountered. In addition, the postcards play on the classic ‘face-in-hole’ beachfront boards, by allowing the visitor to place themselves in the thick of it, recording themselves to insert in the postcard soundcape, whether they want to sing a song, tell a joke, describe the scene or simply tell the recipient that they’re ‘having a lovely time’.
