no beginning middle or end
My soundscape is made up of five pieces of looping audio. They are about 38 seconds each. They are set to play in concert. Without thinking about it a ton, I’d set a few pieces to pan to the right, a few to the left. In retrospect, those panned right are more about the experience of the testimony in my body. The channel panned to the left is a muffled explanation. Two channels are not panned, and they are environmental. They are neutral.
I created this soundscape to express the ways in which testimony shows up outside of a written, spoken, or sung statement. I wanted to make this piece into a living thing, it’s something you can engage with. You can mute or isolate channels, you can raise the volume or alter the panning. There’s something about this ability to manipulate this project that is particularly meaningful to me. I’ve set it up for you in the way that I hear it, and it’s important to me that you can alter it as it makes sense to you. As something that can always be manipulated, it’s never really done. Both inherently as a series of looped audio, and in the possibility to alter the sounds, it’s an unfinished, living piece. If you refresh the page, the audio will restart with my settings, and can be altered all over again. And again.
