The Road
Following an unspecified apocalyptic event, you and your child are making a slow, dangerous trek South where you hope to find more warmth than the ash-covered, picked-over wastes of what was once your homeland. No more cars travel these roads, no more planes pass overhead. Animal life is as scarce as canned goods, fuel, or ammo. You wait quietly in the storm as any noise you make could alert marauders to your position, putting you and your child in mortal danger. You stay so quiet you can hear your own heartbeat in your ears. You hope that the fire keeping you both alive is enough to get you until dawn, when you will get up and continue trudging slowly due south through the wasteland... to a better place.
